The M4 bayonet design was based on the M3 Fighting knife, so conversion of the M4 bayonet back to a fighting knife was relatively easily done at arsenal. The pommel locking mechanism was removed, and aluminum and brass washers attached before the tang was peened over to hold the grip tight. The cross guard was
