This is a lovely, worn example of a scarce Ersatz papercloth officer's forage cap. They are made of a very coarse cloth, which looks to be very similar to the "papercloth" used on WWI German "Ersatz" canteen covers. They are not soft, and the interior is made of the same material woven differently. The sweatband looks to be pressed paper faux leather, as does the chin strap on the front of the cap.
